      1. And?
I am sorry you had a firearm against your head.
Still doesn’t change the fact that violence predates the invention of firearms by thousands of years.

We have a heart problem, not a gun problem.

  1. Yes, but 3boxes, you’re missing the point. Guns were actually an invention, a new method of facilitating all those ghastly things you’ve just outlined. So yes if they had never been invented it would have been one way less of bringing about some pretty terrible experiences. Actually I’v been shot twice and been offered a gun to defend myself. But I refused. It would only have harmed or killed more people when all’s said and done. also the elastic propelled flint blade, which could kill at 30 yards, pre-dates written history. It could almost be classed a gun, though not a gunpowder inspired one.

    1. Anton,

I’m not missing the point. Weapons were invented to facilitating violence. Want to un-invent something? I would suggest we un-invent the desire for people to do violence on each other.

I also disagree with your assessment that the firearm would have harmed or killed more people. Had you a firearm and the will to use it, violence could have been prevent. We will never know in your case but in time after time, we’ve seen people use firearms to stop violence; rapes, murders, assaults.

There are two basic types of violence; predatory and protectionary. When some people refuse to listen to reason, refuse to abide by the normal strictures of culture; sometimes the only answer is protectionary violence.

Your point (pardon the pun) about the elastic propelled flint illustrates my point; un-invent firearms and something else would take their place. Possibly something worse.

  2. I understand your sentiment, even if 3boxesofbs wants to deliberately misunderstand you to get his/her political point across.

It’s symbolic (the use of the word “guns”) of violence in general. And it’s a wonderful sentiment.

Wishing for a better, less violent world is a good use of your “wishes”, and I understand completely.

And congrats on your 500th post, btw! Something to live up to! 🙂

    1. Siouxsie,

Words have meanings. Authors chose words, usually most carefully, based on their meanings.

Authors publish those words to provoke a response.

Do I agree with the symbolic (according to you) violence in general being un-invented — absolutely.

Wishing doesn’t make the world a better place though; that takes action on our part.

      1. No one said you weren’t entitled to your opinion. But–guess what? Others are entitled to disagree.

Please don’t assume because YOU “choose your words most carefully to provoke a response”, that this is everyone’s intention in writing.

Some people write, (and yes, even publish!) their semi-formed thoughts as catharsis, or as a way to help themselves decide about things.

I don’t write for you, or anyone else. So whatever response that my writing illicits in you is purely your own. And you’re welcome to it.

As for “wishing” – it would seem to me that desire comes before action. So, without the wish, there would be no will. A child wishing upon a star for the end to cancer (or violence) may just be our next world leader or great healer, who will take action to make his wishes come true.

Good luck. You’re welcome to respond, and of course you will be heard. But for me, this conversation is essentially over. I don’t have time to engage with people who don’t have room for dreams.

I wish you good luck and good fortune.

      2. Bob, I appreciate all points of view as part of our rights of freedom of speech. I am not sure where you reside, but I have lived in Johannesburg for 33 years. People live their lives in constant fear. Over 50 people are shot dead per day by people using guns. Most of these perpetrators are men. Carjackings happen anytime, anywhere. People steal guns from others so they can continue their rampage and destroy. So the choice of my image is a scenario that is very familiar to the people of South Africa. Where guns are in their face and they do not know if they will live or die. So to extend my response, I would un-invent violence and unemployment and social inequality and hearts that would conjure up violence, as well as men that exert their physical advantage over women and nuclear bombs and balaclavas.

I have never been part of the US debate on gun ownership. I have never been to the US. In Australia guns are illegal apart from special conditions. It is not to say that it is a completely safe country. There was a siege last year where 3 people were shot dead. But in general I feel so much more safer than my life in Johannesburg. But that is because of different social issues.

Thank you for your thoughts and for sharing.

I wish you all the best,
        Vonita.

  3. if you read my original post on this topic called’many moons ago’ you see i agree with all of you but take issue only on what words are as we use them.i called guns an invention because that’s what they were. in my briefest of posts i made it clear that human nature isn’t. it is a natural state which contains all the more repugnant things on earth. but it can’t be undone because it was not invented in the first place. this is blogging at its best ; for fun, even on a serious point.
