Closet is not a word commonly used in South Africa or Australia. We rather use the word ‘cupboard’. The only way in which it is used is in the term ‘coming out of the closet’, or ‘still in the closet’.

The same for us in Kenya we don’t use words like “couch” rather “sofa”

In South Africa we used couches, in Australia they seem to call it lounges.

Visiting family in Canada as a child, I asked for soda by that name rather than “pop” which they used. My dads cousin was shocked, “really Laurie?” as she reached for baking soda.
