Over the past few months (since end October), I have been buying US dollars on a travel card. $1000 AU dollars would buy approximately $675 US dollars. Well, I’ve really shot myself in the foot because the exchange rate has suddenly swung in my favor and would now buy $730. Except I’ve already bought the bulk of what we may need! Any suggestions on what a daily budget would need to be for food, gas, holiday expenses (excluding accommodation), for a family of four? $250 – would that be enough per day? Just looking for an estimate to budget pls, obviously it won’t be the same every day. We will be in California in three weeks!

  1. It depends on where you are! The more on the coast the more expensive. How much are you driving each day? Are you basically eating in restaurants or fast food places? How many places do you visit for which you have to pay for tickets? Do you plan to shop?
    Basically, I would say that 250 is well calculated. Food is not expensive. Just for sure have your credit card with you!

    1. Thanks for the reply Erika! I’ve bought Alcatraz tickets and will buy theme park tickets this weekend. We will be driving from San Francisco to Yosemite, then to Monterey, la, Anaheim, San Diego and drop off car at lax airport. So will need fuel and will be eating combination of restaurant food and fast food for dinner and light lunches and breakfast cereals (a few places we have breakfast included). May go to Monterey aquarium but will get tickets there.

      1. So you go all the way from North to South, very cool!
        I would say for eating 250 a day is is really good, even with ice cream and drinks here and there. I don’t know the fuel prize at the moment. But you can find that out and calculate with the miles you drive. The more tickets you can buy online at home (or even there) the cheaper it is. As I said, take your credit card along and you will be fine.
        So happy for you that you go to Cali!

  5. Yay! Time to visit Universal Studios, Disneyland, the Promenade, and walk along Hollywood. US$250 per day, excluding accommodations, for a family of four is more than enough. Rent a car with GPS on it but if you get lost, just look for 405… 🙂
