It was a smile of recognition, not joy. This piece was like a flash of revelation to me: self-pity (or depression) has an odd circular quality to it where we end up where we started.
Yes, my human nature prompts me to desire things I don’t, or can’t have. But if I had them would it make me happier? Probably not. It is easy to desire the result, and not see the cost. Writing is my therapy!
