Teenager

It’s finally happened. Well, it happened a few months ago already, but yesterday it really happened. My title changed. I am no longer just a mother. Mom. Mum (in Australian terms). I’m a mother of a teenager. And yesterday morning I had my first real test.

I had a robot in the car. Incapable of speaking like a normal person, but using a deadpan robotic voice. Followed by the ‘I don’t know what to say because you are asking weird questions’. Questions about the day ahead. General conversational type questions. These are now suddenly weird questions, and I am not worthy.

Not impressed. So I did the only thing I could do. I dropped him off and never said goodbye. No ‘I love you’ and ‘have a good day’ and blah blah. Just nothing. He said thank you. And waited. Nothing. He repeated his thank you in his robotic voice. Nothing. And so he left. And I got on with my day.

Different attitude when I collected him. He asked me are you going to speak to me again? Not if you are a robot, I don’t speak to robots. In general. And then it happened.

I didn’t realize that was how I was sounding. I won’t speak like that again.

  1. I hit send too soon. I wanted to empathize with you. I had four kids in four years, so all of mine went through teenagehood at roughly the same time. Three girls! That was fun (not). But we all made it through intact and they grew into adulthood. As the saying goes, this too shall pass.

      1. Another battle this morning that went again to me. We collided in the hallway and he was not moving and I was not moving, and then he tried to manouvre on the side of me that had no space and couldn’t get past so had to then go the other side, I was not budging. Why couldn’t I move, he asked, why did he have to? I’m older, I’m your mother, and you are a man and I am a woman, three reasons right there!

  2. AWE I love this too! That robot voice does go away. I don’t know why they do that. Alex has adopted a British accent. I love hearing it because that means she’s my silly girl again! Life is way too serious to not laugh some! I love your life lessons here they make me smile. I could almost imagine the scene! LOL ❤ Mum Heart Hug to you!

  3. Wonderful story, Vonita ❤ . My children never even went through the "terrible two's," but when they turned 13 it was as though aliens came into their bodies. Good work with your teen. I will pray for you 😉

    1. Thank you, Elaina, he’s been much better since then, seems like I’ve dealt with the robot voice for at least the next short while! He is generally respectful and comsiderate, so I am fortunate so far ❤ at least now I’m on the alert for aliens, to be expected! 😊

    1. I won that battle, and thankful for it, he has been ‘normal’ again since then. I don’t use silent treatment often, it’s something I generally hate, but it seemed to do the trick then!
